Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about home EV charger installation in West Michigan.
How long does EV charger installation take?
Most home EV charger installs are completed in a single visit. The timeline depends on the distance between your charger and your electrical system: how far your charger sits from the panel, whether the run goes through finished space, and whether your panel has a free slot for a new circuit. If your service needs upgrading first, that adds time. Your ENS electrician gives you the actual timeline at the site visit, before you commit to anything.
Will I need an electrical panel upgrade first?
Sometimes, and you’ll want to find this out as early as possible. A Level 2 charger runs on its own 240-volt circuit, typically 40 or 50 amps, and older West Michigan homes on 100-amp service often don’t have that headroom to spare. During the site visit, we calculate whether your existing service can carry the load, and you’ll hear either way before we schedule any work.
What’s the real difference between Level 1 and Level 2 charging?
Level 1 is the cord that shipped with your car. It plugs into an ordinary 120-volt outlet and adds roughly 2 to 5 miles of range per hour. This can work for a plug-in hybrid or a short commute, but it can be frustrating for anything else. Level 2 runs on a 240-volt circuit, the same kind feeding your electric range, and adds around 10 to 20 miles per hour, with higher-output units on efficient vehicles doing better. For most drivers, Level 2 is the difference between recharging daily and not.
Are there rebates available for a home charger in West Michigan?
If Consumers Energy serves your home, yes. Their PowerMIDrive program pays a $500 rebate on a qualifying Level 2 charger, up to $1,000 for income-qualified customers, with conditions: the charger has to be ENERGY STAR rated and UL certified (or supplied by your automaker), rated 9.6 kW or under, professionally installed with an electrician’s invoice, and you must enroll in the Nighttime Savers rate. If you’re served by a municipal utility like Holland BPW, the programs differ, so check with them directly. The federal tax credit for charger installation ended for equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026.
Do you handle the permits?
Yes. EV charger installations in Michigan require an electrical permit and an inspection once the work is done, and we handle both. We’ll file the paperwork, coordinate with your utility when needed, and schedule the inspector. You won’t have to chase the city or the utility on your own.
